So I got on the scale last night. That was a mistake. Granted, I haven’t been to the gym in like 8 weeks for various reasons – maybe longer…but the number was not acceptable – whatsoever.

Not happy about it. I can still wear my clothes, but I hate that its so high. I know it’s not healthy so I have to fix this.

First order of business – get back on task with the food intake. I can do this, I’ve done it before!

Second order of business – get back to the gym. This is going to be harder considering I’m fricken exhausted all the time, but I’m going to try like hell.

My first goal? 10lbs.  That’s 35,000 calories I need to burn or not consume.

I can do that.

I found this useful tool to calculate calories burned while doing various activities and this one to figure out how many calories a day I should consume. (You should know that 3 hours of being in the pool teaching swimming lessons burns about 1146 calories. Considering I spend 3 hours solid jumping around the pool and acting like an idiot I’ll consider that to be aerobics. That totally explains why I was so damn hungry last Sunday.)

According to that site, I should consume about 2,300 calories a day to maintain my weight. I don’t want to maintain my weight though, I want to lose weight. BUT! Previous research has indicated that 1,600 calories per day is an acceptable amount to consume and lose weight at a safe for me pace. Previous research has also indicated that about 35 grams of fat is ok too and I try to eat as much fiber as I do fat grams.

I’m creating a spread sheet and going to put it in Google Docs. The chart itself will begin on Monday, but I’m going to start practicing today. I’ll post weekly updates in the new sidebar. If I don’t, please remind me!

Not going to even try and lie, I’m flat out. The last couple weeks have been insanely crazy busy and I’m behind in everything. Sigh.

When I get this flat out, I get seriously overwhelmed and just crawl into bed and sleep (which is probably what I need most about now, about a day’s worth of sleep…)

This isn’t productive. (Go ahead, say it with me – “Duh.”)

Instead, I make a To-Do list. I know it’s fairly common to have one, but I only really need one when I’m this far gone.

Here’s what’s on mine now (in no particular order):

___get groceries (another entire list)
___return items to Hanes.com
___thaw chicken from freezer
___clean kitchen
___finish washing dishes
___clean out fridge
_X_do something with apple pie (I ate it. For shame)

___find Nora Roberts book for boss

This isn’t by far the final list, just how it stands at 9am today. Nor does it include anything work related. Ha! Hopefully, it’ll be able to be done this weekend and I’ll update it on Sunday to show my progress.

Sigh.

What’s on your To-Do List?

As part of my goals for 2009, I vowed to read more. I’m aiming for a book a week, but sometimes it takes longer. I’m plugging along though.

I won’t do a typical book review because frankly I hate them. What I’m going to do is 10 lines of 10 words or less. I’ll try not to ruin any endings or give away major twists.

Hopefully it will give you enough of an idea about if you want to read the book or not.

Roommates Wanted (Lisa Jewel)

Slow book at first, but keep going, it gets better.

See? There are really good things going on out there.

Just yesterday, as I left my office for lunch, I noticed one of my co-workers in the parking lot struggling with the headlight on her car. The bulb had gone out.

I fixed this MANY times in my old Nissan (like every 100 days – enough that I’d buy the bulbs in multi packs…)

I asked if I could help and quickly had the old light out and the new one in. I saved her $20, but I also saved her time, effort, and I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t warm outside.  We live in fricken Upstate NY for crying out loud.

It was easy to do something for someone else. It took me a whopping 3 min to do it and it fricken made her day.

She brought me a gift card to Dunkin Donuts. Very unnecessary and I told her that – but she insisted.

I only really buy something at Dunkin Donuts on Sundays if I stop for the paper on the way to swimming lessons so $10 should last me at least a few stops.

I’ll put that $10 I don’t spend this month at Dunkin Donuts into my ING account.

What little things have you done to help someone lately?

Sure it sucks. “It” being lots of things. The economy, the job market, my love life…

But, it’s been a long standing philosophy of mine to find a good thing in everything bad that’s going on.  (Also, that something good happens every day, you just have to find it. It might be little, but it’s there!)

Even then Consumerist agrees.

The stock market keeps falling? Now’s the time to buy!

You got laid off? Volunteer for a group you didn’t have time to work with before, change fields, take a class, read those books you’ve been meaning to read for months/years. Breathe.

Don’t have the money to go out and do stuff? Spend some time with family and friends playing board games.

Don’t have the money to go out for dinner? Have a pot luck dinner with friends. For a few dollars, you can create a great meal and good times.

(SIDE NOTE: Some other feel good things you can do for mostly free:  Write letters to friends to say hello… Go to the library and ask for a recommendation on a book from a stranger… Bake cookies and take them to the neighbor you’ve never really talked to…Say hello to someone new, smile at a stranger, take a walk with your camera through your neighborhood…)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Maybe this economic downturn isn’t going to be the worst thing to happen to my generation. Maybe we’ll come out kinder, more relaxed, more thoughtful and more connected from all of this…

I shop online. Not going to lie. It’s easy, convenient and often better prices than in the store. Since the introduction, I’ve made use of it.

Yesterday, I found Ebates 

(A little annoyed I didn’t know about this last month considering I did a bunch of online shopping for my party, but that’s ok.)

By shopping at places I shop online anyway, I get a certain percentage of my shopping back. 6% at Drugstore.com 3% at iTunes 4% at Target (and those are just the ones I shop at regularly! The extensive list can be found here. (There’s even some fun places I didn’t know existed! eBags.com anyone?)

I got $5 for signing up. (And not going to lie, another $5 for anyone who sign up with this link and goes on to make a purchase through Ebates.) 

It cost me nothing to sign up, they’ll send my money to my PayPal account…and its places I shop anyway.

Why not? Extra snow flakes won’t hurt!

So, I’m a bad blogger and should be banished from posting. I’ve been a BUSY CourtneyRyan though and will be back soon.

I’ve read some books, had some company come visit, lost a bestish friend, been sick, been working, living life etc. PLUS I had a party to help stimulate the economy. I haven’t saved as much as I hope, but bygones. The smiles were money well spent.

I havne’t been tracking my budgets as I should, but my bills have been paid (almost all on time, and all before the grace period was up!) and there’s money left in my account when I get paid again so I think that’s good.

As for the gym, I got sick with an upper respiratory thing and had 2 asthma like attacks in the past month. I’m working my way back there, but breathing is still tough sometimes and the doctor wants me to take it easy. I have been teaching swimming and that’s 4 hours of exercise a week there and dancing around my apartment when the mood strikes me

I’m eating a lot of food at home, cooking when I can and trying not to buy so much out and about. Some days? Its hard!

I realize that the above seem like excuses, but I’ve set some pretty serious goals for myself and am taking small steps to get there rather than radical changes, besides, I’ve decided to be a little less hard on myself sometimes.

I have to go home and have dinner with my family tonight before my brother heads back to TX. I’ll post more this week/weekend on what I’ve been up to and some cool things I’ve discovered.
